A laminar flow clean bench (often called a laminar flow hood or laminar flow cabinet) is a type of laboratory equipment designed to provide a clean and sterile environment for handling sensitive materials. It works by creating a unidirectional (one-way) flow of air that sweeps through the work surface, removing contaminants such as dust, microorganisms, and particles from the air around the workspace.
Here's how it works:
Airflow: The bench has a fan that draws in air from the environment and forces it through a high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filter. This filter removes particulate contaminants from the air.
Laminar Flow: The filtered air is then directed in a smooth, uniform flow over the work surface in one direction (usually horizontally or vertically). This "laminar flow" prevents outside air from entering the clean workspace and disturbing the clean environment.
Protection: The clean air flow protects the materials or samples being worked with, and the user can be protected depending on the type of bench. There are different types of laminar flow benches:
Class I Laminar Flow Hood: Provides protection for the user and the environment, but not necessarily for the sample. It exhausts air out of the cabinet, protecting the operator.
Class II Laminar Flow Hood: Offers protection for both the sample and the user. The air flow is designed to protect both, with a combination of airflow directed toward the user and the HEPA-filtered air protecting the sample.
Class III Laminar Flow Hood: A fully enclosed, airtight cabinet, which provides the highest level of protection for both the sample and the user. It's typically used for handling hazardous biological materials or chemicals.
Applications: These clean benches are used in many industries, including microbiology, pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, electronics, and medical research. They're crucial for preventing contamination during procedures such as:
Culturing cells
Preparing sterile solutions
Handling pharmaceutical ingredients
Performing experiments requiring clean environments
